Welcome, folks, to another enlightening episode of "A Word from the Vine." I'm Pastor Loren Christensen, and today we embark on a journey through the profound teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In today's episode, we turn to the book of Matthew, chapter 10, verses 34 to 42. This passage reveals a sobering reality for disciples of Jesus—the reality of persecution. Jesus, in his wisdom, did not shy away from addressing the challenges his followers would face. Let us explore his teachings together.
Jesus proclaims, "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword." These words may initially strike us as surprising, but Jesus is highlighting the division that can arise when one chooses to follow him wholeheartedly.
Our commitment to Jesus and his teachings may cause division within families, friendships, and even communities. It is a consequence of the clash between the values of God's Kingdom and the world's systems. Jesus challenges us to prioritize our loyalty to him, even when faced with the painful reality of division.
Jesus goes on to teach about the cost of discipleship. He tells his followers that those who love their family or their own life more than him are not worthy of him. These words may sound harsh, but Jesus is urging us to examine our hearts and evaluate what holds the highest place in our lives.
Yet, amid the challenges and sacrifices, Jesus provides assurance and hope. He promises that those who receive his disciples and support them in their ministry will receive a reward. Even a simple act of offering a cup of cold water to a disciple will not go unnoticed by our Heavenly Father.
My friends, this passage calls us to consider the cost of discipleship and the potential hardships we may face for our faith. Jesus invites us to place him above all else and to trust in the eternal rewards that await those who faithfully follow him.
As we conclude this episode of "A Word from the Vine," let us reflect on Jesus' teachings. Let us be willing to bear the cross, knowing that our Heavenly Father sees and rewards our sacrifice. May we remain steadfast in our commitment to Christ, even in the face of division and persecution.
Until next time, may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always. Amen.
