A Word from the Vine No. 152: Embracing Humility - A Christ-like Attitude

Welcome, dear friends, to another episode of "A Word from the Vine." I'm Pastor Loren. Today, I want us to reflect on a topic that is close to our hearts: the ramifications of a mindset focused on being right. As Lutherans and as Christians, it's essential that we examine our attitudes and the impact they have on our faith and those around us.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus teaches us about the importance of humility. In Matthew 23:12, He says, "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."

These words of Jesus remind us of the dangers of pride and self-righteousness. When we become consumed with being right, we risk losing sight of the heart of our faith: love, grace, and humility. Our faith should not be about proving ourselves right or exerting dominance over others. Instead, it should be about following the example of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

As Lutherans, we hold dear to our theological heritage, but let us not forget that we are all sinners in need of God's grace. None of us has all the answers, and none of us is without fault. We must humbly acknowledge our own limitations and be open to learning and growing in our understanding of God's Word.

In our pursuit of being right, we may unintentionally develop an attitude of arrogance or exclusivity. We must be aware of this tendency and guard against it. Our faith should never be a barrier that separates us from others, but a bridge that connects us to them.

So, my dear friends, I challenge you to examine your own hearts and attitudes. Are we more concerned with being right than with loving one another? Are we fostering an environment of humility and grace within our Lutheran communities? It's time for us to take a humble posture, recognizing that we are all sinners saved by God's grace.

When we embrace humility, we become a shining example of Christ's love and attract others to the faith. Our churches will grow stronger, not by asserting our rightness, but by humbly living out the message of the Gospel.

Let us remember the words of Jesus: "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted." By embracing humility, we align ourselves with the heart of Christ and foster unity within the body of believers.

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father, we come before you humbly, recognizing our tendencies towards pride and self-righteousness. We ask for your forgiveness and guidance. Help us to adopt a Christ-like attitude of humility, always mindful of our own need for your grace. Teach us to love one another, to bridge divides, and to foster unity within the body of believers. May our humility attract others to the faith and bring glory to your name. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
