A Word from the Vine No. 154: Embracing God's Call - Jonah's Journey of Obedience

Welcome, dear friends, to another episode of "A Word from the Vine." Today, we delve into a story that teaches us valuable lessons about obedience even when we don't feel like it. Let's turn our attention to the book of Jonah, chapter 1, verses 1 to 3.

"The word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 'Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.' But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord."

Jonah, a prophet of God, received a clear and direct command. He was to go to Nineveh, a city known for its wickedness, and deliver God's message of repentance. But instead of obeying, Jonah decided to flee in the opposite direction.

You see, dear friends, sometimes we find ourselves in a similar position. We receive a calling from God, a command to act or a change of direction, but we hesitate. We resist. We don't feel like obeying because it challenges our comfort or goes against our own desires.

Jonah's resistance to God's call had consequences. A great storm arose, endangering the lives of those on the ship he had boarded. Jonah knew that his disobedience was the cause of the storm, and he willingly admitted it. The sailors, in awe of the power of Jonah's God, cast him overboard to calm the raging seas.

But here's where the story takes a remarkable turn. As Jonah sank into the depths of the sea, God provided a great fish to swallow him, preserving his life. In the belly of the fish, Jonah realized the gravity of his disobedience. He prayed earnestly for forgiveness and committed himself to fulfill God's command.

My friends, the story of Jonah teaches us that obedience is not optional. When we resist God's call, we not only put ourselves at risk but also those around us. God's plan is greater than our own desires and inclinations. We must trust in His wisdom and submit to His guidance, even when it doesn't align with our preferences.

Obedience is not about how we feel in the moment; it's about aligning our will with God's perfect will. It's about surrendering our desires, our comfort, and our fears to the Lord. Through Jonah's journey, we see the transformative power of obedience when we choose to embrace God's call.

In our next episode, we will explore the story of David as another example of obeying God when we don't feel like it. Join us as we dive into the Scriptures to discover valuable insights and practical guidance on cultivating a willing heart. Until then, may you find strength in God's presence and the courage to obey even when it's challenging. May His grace guide you in every step of your journey.

Remember, dear friends, to walk in obedience to our loving Father. And as always, let the Word of God be the lamp unto your feet and the light unto your path. I'm Pastor Loren Christensen of Danish Countryside Chapel. Until we meet again, may God bless you and keep you. Shalom.
