A Word from the Vine No. 227: The Lost Art of Self-Sufficiency

Hello again, folks, it's Pastor Loren Christensen, and this is "A Word from the Vine." Today, we're going to dig deeper into a subject that's near and dear to my heart – self-sufficiency. Our world has become a place of great convenience, but it's also a place where we've lost some fundamental life skills along the way. Today, we're going to discuss why it's crucial to reclaim these skills and why the Bible has something to say about it. Our scripture reference today comes from 1 Timothy 5:8, which says, "But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."

Friends, this verse from 1 Timothy is a powerful reminder of our responsibility to provide for our families. But it goes beyond just putting food on the table and a roof over our heads. It speaks to our ability to be self-sufficient, to take care of our loved ones in times of need. It's not just about survival; it's about thriving and being resilient.

So, what does self-sufficiency look like in the modern world? Well, it means having the skills to grow your own food, knowing how to maintain your home, being able to provide basic first aid, and having a plan for emergencies. These skills are not just for "preppers" or those waiting for doomsday. They are for anyone who wants to be a responsible and capable member of their family and community.

Think about it, friends. In times of crisis, whether it's a natural disaster or a societal breakdown, what happens to those who can't provide for themselves or their families? They become dependent on others, and that's not a position anyone wants to be in. It's about dignity, it's about being able to care for our loved ones, and it's about living out the principles of faith.

Now, I'm not saying we should all become experts in every skill overnight, but we should take steps to learn and grow. Start a small garden, learn basic home repair, take a first aid course – these are all steps in the right direction. And remember, it's not just about you; it's about being a responsible Christian who can lend a hand to those in need.

So, my friends, let's not forget the lost art of self-sufficiency. Let's embrace the wisdom of 1 Timothy 5:8 and provide for our families in every sense of the word. It's about being resilient, responsible, and faithful. God bless you all, and may you be the providers and protectors your loved ones need.
