A Word from the Vine No. 30: Understanding Jesus - The Mystery of His Humanity and Divinity

I'm Pastor Loren Christensen of Danish Countryside Chapel. Thanks for joining us today. In this episode of "A Word from the Vine," we will explore the concepts of communicatio idiomatum, genus idiomaticum, genus apotelasmaticum, and genus magisterium and how they relate to Jesus' human and divine nature. These concepts can seem complex, but by examining scripture, we can gain a deeper understanding of Jesus' nature and how he relates to us.

Communicatio idiomatum refers to the communication of properties between the two natures of Jesus - his human and divine nature. This means that what can be said of one nature can also be said of the other, as they are united in the person of Jesus. For example, we can say that Jesus, who is fully human, is also fully divine.

Genus idiomaticum refers to the properties or characteristics of each nature that are unique to that nature. For example, Jesus' ability to hunger and thirst is a property of his human nature, while his ability to perform miracles is a property of his divine nature.

Genus apotelasmaticum refers to the goal or purpose of each nature. Jesus' human nature had a specific goal or purpose - to reconcile humanity with God - while his divine nature allowed him to accomplish this goal through his death and resurrection.

Finally, genus magisterium refers to the teaching authority of the Church. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Church has taught and preserved the truth about Jesus' nature and the Trinity.

By understanding these concepts and examining scripture, we can gain a deeper understanding of Jesus' human and divine nature and how they relate to one another. For example, we can see Jesus' humanity in his temptation in the desert, his suffering on the cross, and his interactions with his disciples. At the same time, we see his divinity in his miracles, his authority over nature and sin, and his resurrection.

Through the unity of Jesus' human and divine nature, we are able to see the fullness of God's love for us and his desire to reconcile us to himself. Let us continue to seek understanding and wisdom as we grow in our faith and relationship with God.
