A Word from the Vine No. 327: Love as Giving, Not Getting

Greetings, dear friends. Pastor Loren here, and I'm delighted to continue our exploration of love on "A Word from the Vine." Today, our focus is on Acts 20:35, a verse that encapsulates a profound truth about the nature of love.

The scripture says, "In all things, I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" This teaching from Jesus underscores a transformative principle that extends beyond material possessions – it speaks to the very essence of love in our relationships.

In the context of our connections with others, how often do we find ourselves approaching love with an expectation of receiving? Whether it's attention, affirmation, or affection, our default mode might lean toward "what can I get?" This mindset, however, can inadvertently strain relationships and hinder the depth of connection we desire.

Acts 20:35 challenges us to shift our perspective from receiving to giving. "It is more blessed to give than to receive" – a revolutionary statement that holds the key to unlocking the richness of love. When we approach our relationships with a heart geared toward giving, we create an environment where love can flourish and deepen.

Consider the beauty of selfless love in action. Picture a relationship where both partners focus on what they can give, rather than what they can get. It becomes a dance of mutual support, encouragement, and sacrificial love. Each person seeks to contribute to the well-being and happiness of the other, fostering a bond that withstands the tests of time.

As we reflect on Acts 20:35, let's challenge ourselves to embody the spirit of giving in our relationships. What can we offer to our loved ones today? It might be a kind word, a thoughtful gesture, or simply the gift of our time and attention. In giving, we discover the true joy and blessing of love.

Join me in this contemplation as we strive to cultivate a culture of selfless love, following the example of our Lord Jesus Christ. May our relationships be characterized by a spirit of generosity, making them a source of blessing and joy for all involved.
