I'm Pastor Loren, and welcome to “A Word from the Vine.” Today, we will finish up our short, three-part series on the Book of Amos, Chapter 7, focusing on Amos’ calling and mission as described in Amos 7:14-15.
Let's read our scripture for today from Amos 7:14-15 together: “Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, ‘I was no prophet, nor a prophet’s son, but I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs. But the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, “Go, prophesy to my people Israel.”’”
Amos was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs, not a professional prophet. His humble beginnings highlight the extraordinary nature of his calling. Amos did not come from a lineage of prophets, nor did he have formal training in prophecy. He was an ordinary man, living an ordinary life, when God called him to an extraordinary mission.
Despite his background, God called Amos to deliver a critical message to Israel. This teaches us the importance of obedience to God’s call, regardless of our qualifications. Amos’ story reminds us that God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called. When God calls us, He equips us with what we need to fulfill His purposes.
Reflect on how we can respond to God’s call in our own lives with humility and obedience. Just as Amos responded to God’s call with a willing heart, we too are called to listen for God’s voice and follow His direction. It may require stepping out of our comfort zones and facing challenges, but it is through obedience that we fulfill God’s purposes. Let us ask ourselves: Are we open to God’s call? Are we willing to follow where He leads, even if it means leaving behind our familiar routines?
May we be inspired by Amos’ example to listen for and respond to God’s call in our lives. Let us embrace humility and obedience as we seek to fulfill God’s purposes.
Thank you for joining us on “A Word from the Vine.” Until next time, may God bless you and guide you in His ways.
