A Word from the Vine No. 464: The Value of Children

Welcome back to “A Word from the Vine.” I’m Pastor Loren Christensen. Today, we’re going to explore the profound value of children in our lives and communities.

Let me start with a story. There was a young boy named Samuel who loved to visit his grandmother’s house. Every time he visited, she would tell him stories about Jesus and His love for children. One day, Samuel asked, “Grandma, why does Jesus love children so much?” His grandmother smiled and said, “Because children have a special place in God’s heart. They teach us how to trust, how to love, and how to have faith.”

In Mark 10:13-16, we read:

“And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, ‘Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.’ And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.”

In this passage, we see people bringing their children to Jesus, hoping He would bless them. However, the disciples rebuked them, thinking that Jesus had more important matters to attend to. But Jesus, seeing this, was indignant. He welcomed the children, blessed them, and used this moment to teach a profound lesson about the Kingdom of God.

Why did Jesus place such importance on children? It’s because children embody qualities that are essential for entering the Kingdom of God—trust, dependence, and humility. They approach life with an openness and simplicity that we often lose as adults.

Think about the pure faith of a child who prays with complete trust that God hears them. They don’t overcomplicate things; they simply believe. This kind of faith is what Jesus calls us to have.

Children are a precious gift from God, and it is our responsibility to nurture and value them. This means investing in their spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being.

Consider the impact of a Sunday school teacher who dedicates their time to teaching children about God’s love. These children grow up with a strong foundation of faith, knowing they are valued and loved by God and their church community.

As a church, we must support families and children in practical ways. This could be through programs, mentorship, or simply being there for one another in times of need.

Think about a single mother in our congregation who is struggling to make ends meet. The church steps in to provide support—whether it’s through financial assistance, childcare, or emotional support. This act of kindness not only helps the mother but also shows the children that they are part of a loving and supportive community.

Let’s reflect on how we can learn from the humility and openness of children in our faith. How can we approach God with the same trust and simplicity?

Thank you for joining me today on “A Word from the Vine.” Let’s remember the value of children in our communities. Let us nurture and support them, and learn from their humility and openness. By doing so, we honor the teachings of Jesus and build a stronger, more loving community. Until next time, may God bless you and keep you.
