A Word from the Vine No. 483: Signs of Hope

Welcome to "A Word from the Vine." I'm Pastor Loren Christensen of Danish Countryside Chapel in Exira, Iowa, and today we begin a series of reflections inspired by the Advent season. Our first episode is titled "Signs of Hope."

In Luke 21:25-28, Jesus speaks of signs in the sun, moon, and stars, and distress among nations. These signs can be unsettling, but they also remind us that our redemption is drawing near. As we see turmoil in the world, we are called to lift our heads and find hope in the promise of Christ's return.

The passage reads: "And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

Think about the events we witness today—natural disasters, war, political unrest, economic instability. These can cause anxiety and fear, but Jesus tells us to straighten up and raise our heads because our redemption is drawing near. These signs are not just warnings; they are reminders that God is in control and that a better place awaits us.

For example, consider the recent natural disasters that have struck various parts of the world. Hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires have caused significant damage and loss. These events remind us of the fragility of our earthly existence and the need to place our hope in something greater than this world.

Similarly, war, political unrest and economic instability can create a sense of uncertainty and fear. We may worry about the future and what it holds for us and our families. But Jesus' words remind us that these signs are part of a larger plan. They point to the coming of God's kingdom and the fulfillment of His promises.

So, as we navigate these challenging times, let's focus on the hope that these signs bring. Let's remember that our ultimate hope is not in this world, but in the promise of Christ's return and the eternal home He has prepared for us.

Let us pray. Heavenly Father, thank You for the signs that remind us of Your promises. Help us to lift our heads and find hope in the midst of turmoil, knowing that our redemption is drawing near. Strengthen our faith and keep our eyes fixed on You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Join me next time as we continue our Advent reflections. Until then, may you find hope in the signs of God's promises. God bless.
