A Word from the Vine No. 526: Testing God

Writer: Chris MeyerChris Meyer

Hello, and welcome back to A Word from the Vine. I'm Pastor Loren Christensen. Today, we conclude our series on the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness by exploring the third temptation—testing God.

Imagine standing on the pinnacle of the temple in Jerusalem, looking down at the crowds below. The devil says to Jesus, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,' and 'On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone'" (Luke 4:9-11).

The devil is quoting Scripture, trying to convince Jesus to test God's protection. But Jesus responds, "It is said, 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test'" (Luke 4:12).

This temptation is about presumption and testing God's faithfulness. The devil twists Scripture to tempt Jesus into forcing God's hand. But Jesus knows that true faith does not test God; it trusts in His plan and timing.

In our own lives, we may face similar temptations. We might be tempted to test God's faithfulness by putting ourselves in risky situations or demanding signs from Him. But true faith means trusting God without needing to test Him.

Think about the areas in your life where you might be tempted to test God. Are there times when you demand signs or proof of His presence? Jesus' response challenges us to trust in God's plan and timing, even when we don't have all the answers.

Consider how you can cultivate a deeper trust in God. Maybe it's through regular prayer and meditation on His Word, or by reflecting on His past faithfulness in your life. Remember, God is always with us, and we can trust Him to guide and protect us.

Take a moment to reflect on how you can apply this lesson in your daily life. How can you ensure that your faith remains strong, even when faced with the temptation to test God? Perhaps it's seeking support from your faith community or regularly reminding yourself of God's promises.

As we conclude this short, four-part series, let's remember the lessons we've learned from Jesus' temptations in the wilderness. In the first temptation, we saw the importance of prioritizing spiritual nourishment over physical needs. In the second temptation, we learned to worship and serve God alone, avoiding the allure of power and glory. And in this final temptation, we are reminded to trust in God's plan and not test His faithfulness.

Jesus' victory over these temptations shows us that we, too, can overcome the devil's schemes by relying on God's Word and the power of the Holy Spirit. Let us take these lessons to heart and apply them in our daily lives.

As we face our own temptations, let us remember Jesus' example. He relied on Scripture, trusted in God's plan, and emerged victorious. We, too, can find strength and guidance in God's Word, knowing that He is always with us.

Thank you for joining me today on A Word from the Vine. I hope this series has been a blessing to you. May God bless you and keep you as you walk in faith and trust in His promises. Amen.
