A Word from the Vine No. 554: What Grief Doesn't Erase

Hey there, friends. You're listening to A Word from the Vine, and I'm Pastor Loren, coming to you from the Danish Countryside Chapel, just outside of Exira.

Grief has a way of making you doubt things you've never doubted before. It crept up on me, too, in the quiet weeks after we buried Keli — a nagging, low-grade fear that maybe the promises I've preached my whole life were easier to say than to trust.

Paul understood that ache. He wrote to the Thessalonians about grief plainly, without pretending it away:

"We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope." — 1 Thessalonians 4:13

Notice what he doesn't say. He doesn't say don't grieve. He says don't grieve as those who have no hope. There's a real difference. Christian grief is still grief — heavy, disorienting, sometimes angry. But it's grief carried inside a promise, not grief standing alone in the dark.

I miss my friend. That hasn't changed, and I don't expect it to anytime soon. But underneath the missing her, there's still something steady holding me up — the same something I've spent my whole ministry pointing other people toward.

If you're grieving today, you don't have to fake being fine to prove your faith is strong. You're allowed to hurt and hope at the very same time.
