A Word from the Vine No. 458: The Universal Human Concept

This is "A Word from the Vine," coming to you from the beautiful Danish Countryside Chapel in Exira, Iowa. I'm Pastor Loren Christensen.

Dear friends, as we have seen in our previous episodes, the Golden Rule is a common ethical thread that runs through many of the world’s major religions. Despite the vast cultural and religious differences that exist, this principle of treating others as we would want to be treated unites us all. It is a testament to the shared values that underpin our diverse traditions and beliefs. This common thread reminds us that, at our core, we all seek to live in a world where kindness, respect, and empathy prevail.

Why is the Golden Rule so universally recognized and valued? It is because it resonates with our innate understanding of fairness and empathy. From a young age, we learn to recognize when something is unfair or when someone is being treated unjustly. This sense of fairness is deeply embedded in our human nature. Empathy, too, is a fundamental aspect of who we are. It allows us to connect with others, to feel their joys and sorrows, and to act with compassion. The Golden Rule reflects these intrinsic qualities, guiding us to live in harmony with one another.

Now, let us consider how we can apply the Golden Rule in our daily interactions, community service, and global citizenship. In our everyday lives, this might mean being more patient and understanding with our family members, offering a helping hand to a colleague, or showing kindness to a stranger. It is about being mindful of how our actions affect others and striving to make a positive impact.

In our community, we can embody the Golden Rule by volunteering our time and resources to help those in need. Whether it is through supporting local charities, participating in community clean-up projects, or simply being a good neighbor, we can make a difference by treating others with the same care and consideration that we desire for ourselves.

On a global scale, the Golden Rule calls us to be responsible citizens of the world. It encourages us to advocate for justice and equality, to support efforts that promote peace and sustainability, and to stand in solidarity with those who are marginalized or oppressed. By living out this principle, we contribute to a more compassionate and just world.

As we reflect on the universality of the Golden Rule, let us be inspired to integrate it into every aspect of our lives. Let us strive to treat others with kindness and respect, knowing that in doing so, we are honoring the shared values that unite us all.

Thank you for joining me today.
